Pedodontics focuses on the dental care and oral health of children. Our goal is to provide early intervention, prevent dental problems, and teach lifelong habits for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

Sealants

The chewing surfaces of molars have deep grooves and pits that are highly prone to decay. These narrow fissures collect food and plaque, and may be difficult to clean with toothbrush bristles.

Fissure sealants are hard protective coatings that cover and protect these grooves. They significantly reduce the risk of decay by preventing food and plaque from becoming trapped.

Sealants are recommended for children at high risk of tooth decay. They are painless, non-invasive, and most commonly placed on molar teeth. Not every child needs sealants — we assess based on age, tooth longevity, decay history, and overall dental health.

Extractions

Watching a child lose their first tooth is exciting — and often baby teeth fall out naturally. However, sometimes a tooth needs help if it is badly decayed, damaged, or interfering with the eruption of adult teeth.

Your dentist may take an X-ray to assess the roots and bone. A simple extraction usually requires only a local anesthetic and is quick, safe, and comfortable for the child.

Fillings

Baby teeth, although temporary, are essential for speech, chewing, and guiding the permanent teeth into place. Cavities should be treated promptly to preserve oral health.

Wherever possible, we use tooth-coloured composite resin fillings for children. This material works best for small cavities and provides a natural look. In certain cases, especially larger cavities, crowns may be needed.

Space Maintainers

Space maintainers are custom appliances made of acrylic or metal. They can be removable or cemented and help keep space open for permanent teeth to erupt properly.

If a baby tooth is lost early due to decay or trauma, a space maintainer prevents neighbouring teeth from shifting into the empty space — avoiding future orthodontic complications.

Habit Breaking Appliances

Common habits in children include thumb sucking, nail biting, lip biting, tongue thrusting, and mouth breathing. While many children outgrow these habits, some require assistance to prevent dental or jaw problems.

Habit breaking appliances help correct these behaviours. They may be fixed or removable, depending on the case. They can also help guide jaw development, correct crossbites, maintain space for adult teeth, and act as retainers.

Appliances used include palatal cribs, bluegrass appliances, quad helix, Hayrake, and lip bumpers.
